First Person Shooter Game Genre

Greetings, my fellow readers. As promised in the previous post on digital distribution platforms for computer games, I will be introducing and suggesting games titles from one of my favourite game genres – the First Person Shooter genre. Without further ado, let’s dive into the world of the First Person Shooter genre.

First Person Shooter

What is the definition of the term ‘First Person Shooter’? According to Technopedia, First Person Shooter, commonly known by its acronym FPS, refers to a genre of action video game in which players play from the point of view of the protagonist. Unlike Third Person Shooter (TPS) genre, in which its protagonist’s back is visible to the player throughout the gameplay, FPS only allows the player to view the game through the vision of the protagonist, thus only allowing the player to view the protagonist’s arms near the bottom of the screen, alongside his/her equipped items and/or weapons.

First Person Shooter Game Modes

In reference to Technopedia, FPS genre game modes can generally be categorized into two varying modes: mission mode and multiplayer mode.

  • Mission mode: Single player FPS games usually utilize mission mode as its default mode. Mission mode FPS games mostly require players to battle through levels with ever-increasing difficulty in order to reach the ultimate goal at the end of the game.
  • Multiplayer mode: Game mode that is mostly utilized by multiplayer FPS games and carried out in a shared game environment by a group of players. As suggested by its name, the group of players will need to work together in order to achieve the in-game goals. Capture The Flag, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy are some of the example of multiplayer game modes in terms of FPS games.

  • Bioshock (2007)

Developed by 2K games, Bioshock is the first installment of the Bioshock series, followed by the release of Bioshock 2 in 2010 and Bioshock: Infinite in 2013 due to its roaring success with gamers worldwide.

The game of Bioshock takes place in the fictional setting of Rapture, an underwater utopia stripped of its former glory and inhabited with a variety of Splicers (common enemies of the game), Big Daddies (genetically modified humans in armoured diving suits) and Little Sisters (genetically altered young girls).

The player takes control of its protagonist – a young man named Jack. At the beginning of the game, Jack is depicted to survive a plane crash, which lands him in the middle of the ocean. Later, Jack proceeds to stumble upon the entrance to Rapture in a lighthouse. With nowhere else to go, Jack enters a bathysphere leading him to the underwater city, thus signifying the beginning of his journey through Rapture.

Like any other FPS games, weapons such as simple revolvers to deadly grenade launchers and chemical throwers are available to be equipped by the player throughout the gameplay. However, injectable plasmids found in-game is, perhaps, what sets Bioshock apart from most FPS games. Players will be able to genetically modify Jack by injecting a variety of plasmids into his body, which gives Jack the ability to perform superhuman feats such as shooting flames from his fingertips, lifting objects and items with telekinesis and even unleashing horrifying killer hornets upon his enemies.

The popularity of Bioshock among gamers has earned it a near-perfect rating of 9.7 out of 10 on IGN and a high score of 9 out of 10 on Gamespot. Here is my advice: If this is your first time venturing into the world of FPS games, Bioshock is one game that you should never miss out on, alongside with Bioshock 2 and Bioshock: Infinte.

You can purchase a digital copy of Bioshock on Steam here.

A co-operative action horror FPS developed by Valve Software, Left 4 Dead 2 is the sequel to the award-wining Left 4 Dead – rated by gamers as the number one co-op game for 2008. Set in locations across Savannah to New Orleans, players will be able to traverse zombie infested cities, swamps and cemeteries through its five new extensively-mapped campaigns.

Players are given the option to play as one of the four newly-added survivors – Coach, Nick, Ellis and Rochelle, each with their unique backstories and dialogues in-game. The game also features several game modes – Co-operative game mode, Survival game mode and Versus game mode.

Players can choose to be armed with classic and upgraded firearms or melee weapons in their battle against the zombies (known as common infected) and their mutated counterparts – the Special Infected. Fancy creating chaos from a distant? Left 4 Dead 2 also allows players to carry grenades such as Molotov cocktails, Pipe bombs and Bile Bombs in dealing extra damage towards the undead.

With Left 4 Dead 2’s high rating of 9.0 out 10 on IGN and 9 out of 10 on Gamespot, be prepared to be invested in the world of Left 4 Dead 2 and hours of zombie-killing fun. Want to add a boost to your Left 4 Dead 2 gaming experience? Play Left 4 Dead 2 on multiplayer mode with your friends. You won’t regret it.
